Chik-Fil-A: The Spicy Chicken

Chik-Fil-A: The Spicy Chicken

McDonald’s spicy McChicken sandwich will always hold a special place in my heart.  For a few years in college (and a few months afterward when I was looking for a job) it was a staple for me thanks to its place on the dollar menu.  And for that reason, it’s sort of the fast food chicken sandwich that I compare all others to.  Now I’m not saying that it’s the best, because let’s be honest, fast food chicken is all pretty much the same.  You could go anywhere and get a sandwich and the only real difference will be the toppings or sauces that they put on it.  Chick-Fil-A, though, is a little different; I hold them to a higher standard.  I don’t know if it’s because they clearly put crack in their chicken, or because they somehow manage to find the most polite, friendly and respectful teenagers to work there, but Chick-Fil-A is just different from other fast food places.  Seriously, I don’t know what it is about their food.  Bun, piece of chicken, two dill pickle chips.  That’s it.  But it’s effing delicious.  So when I heard that they were bringing the Spicy Chicken sandwich out to play, I got excited.

I took part in their free promotional giveaway, which entitled me to not only a free sandwich, but the “deluxe” version of it, which includes lettuce, tomato and pepper jack cheese.  We don’t have a Chick-Fil-A that close to our house (it’s probably a 15-minute drive), and my wife gave me shit for driving all the way there just to get this sandwich, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to miss out on free Chick-Fil-A!

Looks pretty much like the picture.

As usual, they had the most polite, friendly kid working the counter there to give me my free meal.  I know it’s all in my head, but when you have good service at a restaurant, fast food or otherwise, it seems to make your meal more enjoyable.  I popped open the little Styrofoam box (seriously Chick-Fil-A, Styrofoam?  What is this, 1988?), and was greeted to a sandwich that looked almost like the picture on the menu.  It wasn’t exact, but it was close.  Then I took my first bite, and keep in mind this is all relative based on the fact that I think all fast food chicken is basically the same, and it was great.  Not a 5/5 great, but it’s probably the best tasting fast food chicken sandwich out there.  It’s not that spicy, it’s on par with Wendy’s or Popeye’s in terms of “spicy.”  But it’s definitely tasty.  If you want spicy, you have to go to a real restaurant, or make it yourself, that’s common knowledge.  But as far as fast food places go, this thing is very good.

In terms of nutrition, it’s what you’d expect from a fried chicken sandwich.  You’re getting close to 600 calories, 40% of your fat for the day, a ton of sodium, etc.  It’s not terrible for you, and actually the regular sandwich (as opposed to the deluxe) is significantly better.  You can try to make yourself feel better by saying you’re eating chicken as opposed to a burger, but honestly you could do worse than Chick-Fil-A.

In summary, it’s great.  It’s tough to tell the difference between chicken sandwiches, but this one really does stand out.  I don’t know if it can take the McChicken’s crown simply because of the price, but in terms of flavor, we have a new champion.

I give it 4 delicious Chocobos out of 5.
